Rod rows up a trophy

The masters first division double, the masters first division men’s coxless quad and the masters first division coxed eight took third place.

Kensington resident, Rod McKinnon, was a member of the jubilant Wemmer Pan Rowing Club squad that took home the masters club trophy at the 107th annual Victoria Lake Club regatta held recently.

A solid performance at Germiston Lake from all 17 Wemmer senior and masters crews led to the club clinching victory.

The masters women’s second division quad also won their event. The masters mixed second division double, the masters women’s second division coxed octuple and the masters men’s first division coxed eight came second.

Wemmer Pan club captain, Elra de Jager said: “Well done to all the crews for collecting so many medals and, ultimately, the masters club trophy. Excellent efforts.”

The Wemmer Pan Rowing Club has a Learn to Row programme. Many of the rowers in the medalling crews have been rowing for two years and most and are products of the programme.

The club also has a junior development section that offers coaching to school pupils and students.

The club will be running its annual winter rowing clinic during the July school holidays.
