Malvern’s Try Again FC triumphs through penalties
Both teams showed character in the opening minutes, creating chances but failing to convert.
Malvern’s Try Again FC won 6-5 on penalties after being tied 1-1 after full-time in the tightly contested game against Jeppe’s Limpopo FC.
The match was played at the Rhodes Park Sports Grounds on Sunday, August 10.
Both teams showed character in the opening minutes, creating chances but failing to convert. Try Again FC were more enterprising, spending a lot of time on the ball, searching for the game’s opener.
It did not take long before their efforts were rewarded. A cross was whipped into Limpopo FC’s 18-yard-area and the defence failed to deal with the cross. A Try Again FC striker rose above the defenders to head the ball into the back of the net to make it 1-0.
The goal rattled the Limpopo FC players who seemed to play with more direction and purpose, keeping the ball on the ground and playing one-touch football.
Their sublime exchanges resulted in them creating an opportunity that resulted in the equaliser.
A defence-splitting pass was received by a Limpopo FC player, who showed composure in front of goal and slotted the ball in.
The final minutes of the game were more exciting, as both teams hoped to snatch the winning goal. At full-time, the teams were tied at 1-1 and it was time for the lottery of penalties.
Both teams took their spot kicks well, even leading to the sudden death stage. A Limpopo FC player was unfortunate when his penalty kick hit the up-right, allowing Try Again FC to walk away victorious. @JoburgJourno
