SA taekwon-do team performs well

Sabum Denis Magua and Bo Sabum Hugh Thomson both took silver medals in their large special techniques categories.

The Taekwon-Do South Africa team competed in the International Taekwon-Do Federation’s (ITF) 2014 World Championships and colour belt World Cup in Rome, on Wednesday, July 27.

The team consisted of members of Magua Taekwon-Do clubs in Emmarentia, Olivedale, Rivonia, Bryanston, Edenvale and Malvern East. These clubs represented the organisation Taekwon-Do South Africa.

“In my 20 years of practising Taekwon-Do, this time we made a massive leap by proceeding to the next round and many to the quarter finals, which went down to the wire with such a close result,” said Norman Magua (V Dan).

Sabum Denis Magua and Bo Sabum Hugh Thomson both took silver medals in their large special techniques categories.

“It was inspiring to see our up-and-coming colour belts perform so admirably, also breaking all records for our organisation in the colour belt divisions. This shows that our future is looking bright.” he said.

Grant Fairbrother took gold for patterns and gold for sparring, Abigail Daniels took gold in sparring, Peter Stander received bronze in patterns and bronze in sparring, and Trevor Magagula also received bronze in sparring.

Norman took the grading for Sixth Dan at the end of the tournament.

“This made me the first to attain the Sixth Dan in our country’s organisation, which is a huge honour and a significant step for our country,” said Norman.

He thanked C&R brands for sponsoring them with tracksuits and kit bags. Norman said he was happy with their performances, especially since this was their first step back to the World Championships scene in seven years.
