Canoeist shines at race

The race, which was a 24 kilometre route, kicked off at the Vaal Dam wall and finished at the fisherman’s wharf.

Bedfordview resident and member of the East Rand Kayak Club, Richard Tandy, participated in a river race held at the Vaal Dam.

The race, which was a 24 kilometre route, kicked off at the Vaal Dam wall and finished at the fisherman’s wharf.

Tandy enjoyed participating in the race’s K1 discipline and finished as the fourth, sub veteran in a time of 2 hours and 26 minutes.

While the first 8 kilometres of the river included exciting rapids and wild white water, such as Kloppers, the Shute and Visgat, a boat breaking challenge, the balance of the 16 kilometres was a hard, flat slog with head winds, shallow water and against the current.

This section of the Vaal River is also known as the only uphill river in the world.

The race was the last of its kind before the Fish River Marathon, which takes place in Cradock on October 10 and 11.
