World championships for Jesse
He won all five rounds in the division and beat the Western Cape's top competitor in the final to win the gold.
Reddam House pupil and Edenvale resident, Jesse Sim, was recently selected to represent the Gauteng Karate Federation at the Karate South Africa All-Styles National Championships.
The championships were recently held in Johannesburg.
Jesse was selected to represent Gauteng in two disciplines; namely the boys 14 to 17 age group team kata and the junior individual kata.
Going head-to-head against the best unison kata teams in the country, Jesse’s team emerged victorious, winning the gold medal in the team kata division.
In the 16 to 17 age group individual kata division, Jesse competed against 36 of the country’s top athletes.
He won all five rounds in the division and beat the Western Cape’s top competitor in the final to win the gold.
This now ranks Jesse as number one in South Africa in these two disciplines and has earned him a place in the South African team to compete in two upcoming international events.
He will compete in the Zone 6 Karate Championships, where he will compete against teams from all countries in sub-Saharan Africa, and the WKF Cadet and Junior World Championships to be held in Indonesia in November.
Only the top athlete in each division from each country are invited to attend this tournament.
At the World Championships, he will be competing against the best in the world.
Jesse has been awarded Gauteng colours for karate for the past eight years, and this is the fourth time he will receive SASCOC-approved Protea colours for karate.
