Local racer leads karting championship log
Despite his bad luck on the last day of the recent Cape Town leg of the 2015 National Karting Championship, Cameron O'Connor is still leading the championship.
Cameron, a grade 7 pupil at Reddam House, was in second place when his kart was clipped by rider in third place.
This sent his kart into an uncontrollable spin, leaving it placed in a precarious position in the middle of a blind corner. This resulted in a collision between his kart and another.
His father, Gavin said, “All I heard was a bang and the commentator shouting, ‘Connor is in trouble’. I ran as fast as I could to the scene to find Cameron surrounded by paramedics and race officials. It sent a chill down my spine,” said Gavin.
Although his parents were fearful, along with paramedics and race officials, Cameron was declared fine after being thoroughly checked.
Cameron decided to jump back into his kart, but experienced some difficulty with driving, owing to a bent steering column and axle.
The local racer was right back on the track and surprised everyone when he found himself leading the championship regardless of his damaged kart.
