Craig swims to a bronze
Inas Global Games is the world’s largest sport event for Para-Athletes with an intellectual disability.
36-year-old Craig Groenewald from Aqua Skill Academy in Bedfordview has won a bronze medal in the 400 metre freestyle in the Global Games for the Intellectually Impaired.
The event was held in Guayaquil, Ecuador, on September 26.
He swam the 400 metre freestyle in 4:31.55, putting him in third place.
He also swam a 100 metre butterfly final where he finished in fourth place with a time of 1:05.89.
“I’m proud of Craig, who works hard and is dedicated,” said his coach Theo Verster.
Inas Global Games is the world’s largest sport event for Para-Athletes with an intellectual disability.
This global organisation promotes inclusion through sport and is a full member of the International Paralympic Committee representing intellectual disability.
Groenewald has won numerous awards.
In 1995 he won two gold and one silver medal at the Special Olympics. At the Atlanta Paralympic Games, he won two bronze medals and at the Sydney Paralympic Games he won two bronze medals.
He also received the prestigious South African Sports Award of Disabled Sportsman of the Year.
He currently holds five World Records and 14 South African Records.
