Toni set on representing Africa at Dakar Rally

"I am raising funds to compete in Morocco. You have to race internationally to qualify for the Dakar Rally in 2018."

A Bedfordview motorbike racer is determined to be the first South African woman to compete in the Dakar Rally in South America.

Toni Jardine (23) said that many women compete in the Dakar Rally but a citizen from Africa has never participated.

She said that the Dakar Rally is the biggest motorcycle rally in the world and a large amount ground is covered over a period of 13 days.

“I am raising funds to compete in Morocco. You have to race internationally to qualify for the Dakar Rally in 2018,” said Toni.

She is a personal trainer for many people in the comfort of their homes.

She started racing at the age of 15 and has always had a strong interest in sport.

“I was close to my cousin who races and I decided to start riding back then. We started riding together,” she said.

Her mom, Mandi Mosterd, said it has been Toni’s dream ever since she started riding off-road motorbikes eight years ago to race the Dakar Rally.

“Toni finally feels she is ready to start the procedures to get there and be part of that rally,” she said.

Toni and her mom would like to invite the community to support her at the Barnyard Theatre in Rivonia on November 5 to raise funds in order to qualify in Morocco next year.

Contact Mandi on 082 783 3017 or email info@thelilypad.co.za for tickets.
