Local rider has his eyes set on the future

"After attending training sessions Tylan developed into a competent rider."

Dunvegan Primary School learner and budding motocross rider Tylan Wright has always had a passion for motorcycles.

According to his mother, Sherryn Wright, Tylan has always had a fascination with motorbikes.

She said her seven-year-old son has been interested in anything with two wheels for as long as she can remember.

Tylan’s interest in motocross specifically developed when he was six years old.

Sherryn said her son had gone over to a friend who had a small motorbike and wanted one of his own when he returned.

Tylan began his motocross career with an Italjet 50cc in 2015.

“We soon realised that this was not a suitable bike to do any serious motocross riding as it had no suspension or brakes and he was not going to progress,” said Sherryn.

After receiving his second motocross bike, a 100cc Big Boy, Tylan was able to get back on the track and start training.

Sherryn said after attending training sessions Tylan developed into a competent rider.

Just as everything seemed to be set for the budding motocross rider to start his career, he broke his right femur at one of the introductory races.

“He had fallen off his bike and was lying on the track when a bike came over the ramp from behind him and landed on top of him,” said Sherryn.

She said her son’s right femur was broken as a result of the incident.

“It was extremely traumatic to watch,” said Sherryn.

Tylan’s mom said despite breaking his leg, Tylan was rearing to go.

While he was still healing, Tylan would make his way to the bike and try ride it.

“Since he broke his leg he has improved in leaps and bounds,” said Sherryn.

Grandfather and mechanic for Tylan, Mr Costa Couvaras, said it took Tylan six months to get his nerve back.

“I am still worried about him but I am incredibly proud of Tylan,” said Sherryn.

She said her son has a strong passion for motocross and usually places in the top three positions when he competes.

Tylan said he enjoys racing on the track and enjoys jumping over the ramps the most.

Costa said his grandson is incredibly disciplined when it comes to motorcross.

“He maintains his fitness, his diet and all of his school work,” said Costa.

“I hope to be a motocross champion or to take part in the Red Bull X fighters one day,” said Tylan

Sherryn said this year Tylan will participate in club races and focus on doing well during the MXSA Regional races.

Tylan’s grandfather said by focussing on club and regional races, the family hopes Tylan will build a good record to attract sponsors.

“Tylan loves the sport and our feeling is that if he puts in the effort and he is happy we, the family, will do our part to support him,” said Sherryn.
