Football club shows it cares about cancer
With the raffles and donations, the club raised R45 000 which was donated to Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa CHOC, The Jabulani Mendu Foundation, and to cancer patient Barry Deysel
On March 19, the Olympia Football Club in association with the Campania and Abruzzo associations in South Africa hosted a football match to honour all those affected by cancer.
“With the raffles and donations, the club raised R45 000, which was donated to Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa CHOC, the Jabulani Mendu Foundation and to cancer patient Barry Deysel, who is in need of funds to import special medication from America,” said event organiser Guliano Loddo.
The U/8 and U/9 children kicked off the day. They were followed by the U/14 boys, who played against the U/16 girls. The U/16 boys went on to play against the Olympia mixed-side boys aged from 17 to 24.
The main game was the Paolo Biancolli tribute game between the Abbruzzo and Campania veterans. Campania won 7-6.
“Olympia Football Club would like this to become an annual event, the main purpose being to raise money to fight cancer and to raise awareness of cancer in the community. We have formed a section in our club called Olympia Cares.
“The day turned out to be a huge success. I and the organising committee, Bronwyn Hogg, Trudy Webster and Giovanni Di Benedetto, would like to thank everyone for their kind and generous donations and their time. Thanks to all our sponsors and all who shared the day with us,” said Loddo.
Loddo also thanked Stallion Security for the jumping castle and Dj Ali for the music.
“Our next event will be for the orphans, to raise funds so they can have a Christmas present too.”
