Soccer clubs come together in Edenvale for memorial tournament

The annual Memorial Tournament hosted by Edenvale Football Club saw 77 teams come to town and take to the fields.
Known formerly as the John Tennant Memorial Football Tournament, the name of the tournament was changed last year.

EFC chairperson Dalene Holder said the name was changed to pay tribute to all of the club’s members.
“The tournament honours club members who have died, namely former player, coach and referee Lloyd Tiley and Bala Govender.”
It saw players from Gauteng between the u-6 age group category and the u-12 age group category participate.
The various age groups played matches on February 22, 23 and 24.
Holder said the players all enjoyed themselves despite the fact that the u-11 matches needed to be rescheduled because of lightning.
The remaining matches will start at 6.30pm at the Edenvale Sports Grounds on March 8.

u-6
• Tiger award, Kyle from Alberton Football Club.
• Best player in the age group, Jonathan from Edenvale Football Club.
• Best goalkeeper in the age group, Leandro from Alberton Football Club.
u-7
• Tiger award, Diego from Edenvale Football Club.
• Best player in the age group, Matthew from Benoni Northerns Football Club.
• Best goalkeeper in the age group, Kai from Bonaero Park Football Club.
u-8
• Tiger award, Sean from Black Ball.
• Best player in the age group, Riley from Edenvale Football Club.
• Best goalkeeper in the age group, Robert from Edenvale Football Club.
u-9
• Tiger award, Joshua from Edenvale Football Club.
• Best player in the age group, Mabusha from Luso Africa Football Club.
• Best goalkeeper in the age group, Miguel from Edenvale Football Club.
u-10
• Tiger award, Aya from Old Benonians Football Club.
• Best player in the age group, Oliver from Edenvale Football Club.
• Best goalkeeper in the age group, Diego from Bedfordview Country Club.
u-12
• Tiger award, Tshego from Sporting Football Club.
• Best player in the age group, Botshelo from Edenvale Football Club.
• Best goalkeeper in the age group, Ethan from Alberton Football Club.
In the months to come Edenvale’s u-12 soccer team will take part in the Manchester Super Cup and represent South Africa.
Holder said the u-12s are looking for sponsorship for their tour.
