Great rugby showcased at Golden Lions Rugby Union’s 7s Tournament
Golden Lions Rugby Union 7s Tournament closes off another exciting instalment.
The 2019 instalment of the Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU) 7s Tournament held at Randfontein Rugby Club was a scintillating affair on March 23 and 24.

Headlined by GLRU, where former Jeppe High School and current Wits first team players Wandile Simelane and Tyrone Green continue to make a name for themselves, the tournament has been a successful incubator for rugby talent since its inception.

Eventual u-20 division champs Wits Juniors put in impact performances that saw them demolish all and sundry on day one of the fixtures.
Wits beat Randfontein 28 – 0 in their first encounter, before replicating the same form to overcome Harlequins 31 – 7 in their second clash. Wits progressed to the finals with a championship-esque pounding of Germiston Simmers, who simply had no answer to the behemoth performance put up by the Juniors, in their third fixture of the day.
The final score reading was 52 – 0 in Wits Juniors’ favour.

The second and final day gifted spectators the perennial arch-rival fixture that once again pitted Wits against UJ. Wits Juniors put in a regulation performance here, to oust their rivals 19 – 12 on the day.
With this, Wits Juniors were deservedly crowned 2019 u-20 GLRU 7s champions. Michael de Kock was named Player of the Tournament for the Juniors. Meanwhile, Wits Seniors controversially lost to Raiders in the semi-finals, despite rampant displays on day one.
The seniors powered to a 32 – 7 victory over Randfontein and an emphatic 42 – 5 win against Haties in their second game.
Their slender 17 – 19 loss to Raiders in the semi’s meant Wits lost out on the golden chance of being named champions of both divisions. In spite of this, Wits rugby manager Ntsikelelo Ngcakana felt buoyed by the University’s performances over the two days.
“This past weekend was a testimonial that Wits Rugby does have the depth in their squad to compete with some of the best universities in this format of the game,” he said.
