Edenvale Lions basketball players keep the ball rolling

“We are really appreciative for the assistance and by working to raise funds the academy will have a sense of pride and responsibility for its new court.”

With the hopes of creating the court of their dreams, Edenvale Lions Basketball Academy is hosting a raffle to raise much-needed funds.

Members of the academy will sell tickets at the next Horwood’s Farm Family Market on July 7 in the hopes of raising enough money to resurface the court.

Founded in 2016, the academy draws basketball enthusiasts from Edenvale, Bedfordview, Yeoville, Parktown, Germiston and Glenhazel.

Edson Makavan, a coach and co-founder of the academy, said the raffle came to be after parents of one of the academy’s players offered their assistance.

“The couple told us that they did not want to just give the academy the money but rather help us work for the money,” said Makavan.

“We are really appreciative for the assistance and by working to raise funds the academy will have a sense of pride and responsibility for its new court.”

First prize of the raffle is a single flight for four people in a Bell Long Ranger helicopter over Johannesburg and the surrounding areas estimated to be worth R20 000.

Coaches and co-founders of the Edenvale Lions Basketball Academy Edson Makavan and Byron Pinheiro.

Second prize is a one-night stay for one couple at the Gecko Bed and Breakfast and a R500 John Dory’s Greenstone voucher.

Last but not least the third prize is a collector’s item basketball.

Fellow coach and co-founder Byron Pinheiro said depending on how much money is raised the academy will either install a long-lasting court or one which only lasts two years.

He said the academy’s first choice of court will cost approximately R70 000 while the second will cost R25 000.

Currently, the court is in a rough shape being uneven and cracked in multiple places.

Once the court has been resurfaced the duo hopes to obtain new fencing and floodlights installed so that the academy can host a tournament later this year.

Pinheiro said The Vale Tournament hopes to showcase what basketball can become in SA and promote international standards of the sport.

Pinheiro said the raffle draw will be held on Kaya FM in the middle of July.
