“All three were selected for the South African Protea team based on their national ranking points within the country’s all-styles karate fraternity,” said coach Russel Sim.
“They competed against athletes from Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Zambia and Angola.”
Naidoo competed in the girls 14- to 15-year-old kata division and won the bronze medal against Namibia in her final round, thus ranking her as number three in southern Africa.
Alves made it through to the bronze medal match in the girls 10- to 11-year-old kumite division, narrowly missing the bronze medal by one point.
Sim competed in the men’s u-21 kata division, where he won the gold medal in the final against Botswana.
He ranks number one for kata in his division in southern Africa.
“Both Alves and Sim have also been selected by Karate South Africa to represent the national Protea team, which will compete at the WKF World Youth Cup to be held in Umag, Croatia, in July,” said the coach.
