Local volleyball player towers over the competition
“You are never too old for the sport.”
Edenglen resident and volleyball player Yanasagren “Towers” Reddy took to Italy where he competed in the World Masters Games, representing SA.
The 2019 tournament, held in August, was the 46-year-old’s third masters tournament which saw him play for the Aqua Darshan Volleyball team.
The team took gold while Reddy captained a four-man beach team which was awarded bronze.
Reddy started playing volleyball on the streets of Chatsworth and at schools he attended which were AYS Memorial, Meadowlands Secondary and Eastbury Secondary.
In 1993, Reddy played for the Atlanta Volleyball Club which achieved many milestones as one of the best clubs in South Africa.
Besides representing SA on the international stage, Reddy has represented Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.
“At 1.98m in height, I decided to train hard to excel at my game as my position as centre player requires extreme fitness.”
After relocating to Gauteng in 1999 for work, Reddy took a break from the sport to settle in the province.
“In 2015 I played for Starlings Volleyball Club in the Masters Tournament at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and the volleyball bug bit me once again.”
Reddy said teamwork and a good attitude are critical components required for a team to achieve good results.
Other advice he shared included training hard and believing in oneself.
“You are never too old for the sport.”
He thanked his sponsor and everyone who was part of his journey.
“I would like to also thank my wife Veronica, and son Joshua, for always sharing in my passion for volleyball.”
