Helpers go the distance
Held on January 5, the run took the 115 helpers 21.1km through the streets of Bedfordview and Germiston.
Runners took to the streets on January 5 when they competed in the 2020 Dis-Chem Half-Marathon Helpers Run.
The run took the 115 helpers 21.1km through the streets of Bedfordview and Germiston.
The event was held to allow those who assisted in the 2020 Dis-Chem Half-Marathon, on January 12, an opportunity to compete in the half-marathon and have their times recorded.

Those who competed were members of Bedfordview Athletics Club (BAC) but other club members from surrounding areas were present.
Organiser of the Helpers Run and club member, Jane MacKinnon, said the half-marathon organised by BAC annually marks the start of the running season.
“The annual half-marathon is a fund-raiser for the club and two charities which it supports,” said MacKinnon.

2020 marked the 18th year that the Dis-Chem Half-Marathon was held.
MacKinnon said the club has always assisted in hosting the half-marathon even when it was still known as the Bliss 21.1.
The first three runners to cross the line of the 2020 Dis-Chem Half-Marathon Helpers Run were:

Mark Chatham from Bedfordview Athletics Club ran the distance in a time of 1:20;11.
Coming in second was Byron Benson from Edenvale Rand Road Warriors who completed the run in a time of 1:22;40.
Third place went to Michael Psaltis from Bedfordview Athletics Club who finished in a time of 1:24;16.
The first woman to cross the finish line was Angela Temlett from Bedfordview Athletics Club. She completed the run in a time of 1:35;10.
