Running in Speedos for a good cause

The Speedo Run for a Cause was initiated in Giyani, where Sipho met Bongani at a run in December.

Running in Speedos for a good cause is a sight you might get a chance to see at Runzone’s Joburg North City Marathon.

Edenglen Virgin Active club manager Sipho Marima (29) and social runner Bongani Nkulu (38) took on this challenge to raise funds for the disadvantaged on March 22.

“At first we decided to run topless, but my wife wanted to make it more interesting and attractive and said we should run in Speedos,” said Sipho.

The runners decided to run topless if they raise R20 000 and run in Speedos if they raise R40 000.

The Speedo Run for a Cause was initiated in Giyani, where Sipho met Bongani at a run in December.

“People were discussing the previous runs I did to raise funds for children,” said Bongani.

Sipho gained interest,so the pair started planning their first collaboration.

Bongani said he was not nervous about interacting with Sipho in person because he felt like he already knew him.

The social runner also mentioned how the running community has a lot of trust among each other.

The running code has brought people together and as soon as we put on our running gear we all lose our titles.

“People who would not meet anywhere else come together because of this sporting code,” said Bongani.

Sipho, who normally runs in the streets of Edenvale, said he will be training at an undisclosed location.

“I have never run in a Speedo before, so I just want to get familiar with it.”

The two social runners are aiming to raise R40 000 for Little Eden Society in Edenglen and Khomanani Foundation from Thomo.

Bongani, who is from Thomo Village in Giyani, said he was exposed to poverty in this village.

“I would see children walking barefoot, their school uniform in a bad condition and thought how do we expect these children to excel under these cirumstances.

“I want them to focus on their schoolwork rather than what they are wearing.”

At least 20 schoolchildren will receive R1 000 from Khomanani.

Little Eden Society, an organisation close to Sipho’s heart, will receive a much-needed R20 000.
