Annual marathon more than just a race
The Edenvale Marathon is an important fund-raising event for the club
As runners prepare to take to the streets of Edenvale for the Edenvale Marathon, community members have been asked to be patient and understanding.
Set to be held on March 8 the marathon, hosted by Rand Road Warriors Edenvale, in association with StaminoGro, will attract runners from far and wide.
The event consists of a 42km marathon, 21km half-marathon, 10km run and the Rainbows and Smiles “Super Hero” 5km fun run.
Residents can expect to be affected by the day’s events from as early as 4am.
Although the club understands being woken up early on a weekend by noise can be frustrating it appealed to the community to be patient, understanding and tolerant.
Besides the early morning activity, there will be bright lights, loud music and cheering to build energy and further motivate the runners.
Race director and ERRW member Sharon Holton told the NEWS in January that the club will make use of a recycling company in addition to members and volunteers to clean up after the runners.

The Edenvale Marathon is an important fund-raising event for the club, which allows it to invest money back into the town and various charities and organisations.
Some of the beneficiaries of the funds raised include:
• Rainbows and Smiles Trust, which will benefit from the proceeds of the “Super Hero” fun run.
The non-profit organisation is dedicated to providing emotional, social and financial support to children with cancer as well as their families.
Besides proving support the NPO promotes awareness of the early warning signs of childhood cancer.

• Edenvale SPCA, which cares for and protects animals in and around Edenvale.
The SPCA relies greatly on the donations and generosity of the public to allow it to keep on assisting animals in need.
• Edenvale Community Policing Forum (ECPF). Funds from the marathon are donated to the CPF’s Crime Prevention Camera Project.
• The various Scout Troops in the Edenvale area. As the biggest youth organisation in SA the scouting movement changes lives and helps children and young adults reach their full potential.
• Edenvale High School, which will receive two educational bursaries.
The club explained that the funds raised from the prepaid parking at Dowerglen High School and Don Mattera Child and Youth Care Centre (CYCC) will be put back into the school and CYCC to try and assist them.
Closing date for registrations is March 2 and registrations can be collected on March 6, 7 and 8.
