Bennies basketball player makes all-star team

The St Benedict’s College first basketball team took part in the St John’s College U/18 basketball tournament, where Brandon Joseph was selected for the tournament's all-star team.

25 of the top schools from across the country, as well as from Zimbabwe and Swaziland, battled it out for the coveted trophy.

The boys had a tough start, winning their first game against Kearsney by four points in double overtime after Cameron Shirley slotted a crucial three pointer with under 10 seconds left to tie the game.

Game two was another thriller, where Lungile Mgomezulu hit a buzzer-beater with no time left on the clock to win it by two points against Dominican Convent.

Bennies concluded day one with a win over the St John’s College second team.

Day two saw the local team losing to Jeppe and placing second in its pool to make the top 8.

The top 8 group stages saw Bennies beating Waterford from Swaziland and losing a nail biter to St Alban’s College and another game to Micheal Mount to finish third in the group.

This placed Bennies out of a semi-final position. The team from Bedfordview then beat Jeppe Boys in a crossover game. The team lost to Waterford and finished sixth overall.
