“Suspicious envelope” leads to Sanral evacuation

The disruption would affect the Gauteng highway e-tolling system.

The Central Operation Centre (COC) of the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) was evacuated this afternoon after a suspicious envelope containing a white substance was found on the premises.

Security reacted promptly and the Tshwane Hazardous Material Unit was called, resulting in the shutdown of electricity and evacuation of the building.

“Our priority is to ensure the safety of the people who work at the COC, said Mr Vusi Mona, Sanral’s general manager of communication.

He added that the disruption would affect the Gauteng highway e-tolling system.

“We apologise to motorists for any inconvenience which this will cause,” Mr Mona said.

“We take this matter very seriously and condemn this type of action in the strongest possible terms. It is tantamount to sabotage and borders on a very serious crime,” he said.
