Scout groups across Gauteng and beyond meet
The theme of this year’s event was minions, which has some scout groups decorate their rafts according to the theme.
Scout groups across Gauteng and beyond came out in their numbers to fill Arrowe Park in Lakefield and participate in one of the largest scouting events called Kontiki.
A scout group from the North West called 1st Vaal Reef Scouts came to participate, and Theo Matlawe, a troop leader said this was the first time they had participated in this event, and it was a mind-blowing experience, and hoped that in the long run Kontiki could be done in the North West.

Scout groups plan and build rafts and are judged along very strict scouting criteria, such as the types of poles used, the kind of rope used and the various knots and lashings used to construct the raft.
Raft construction started on the afternoon of May 17, and the rafts were launched at 11am on the morning of May 18.

Each raft has a crew of six to eight children, and spend 12 hours on the raft where they cook their own meals and partake in various activities while on the raft.
The rafts must also be mobile, propelled by paddle wheels or oars. Rafts also score points for mobility.
While the cubs took part in the Beaver challenge with over 50 activities, they could choose from bringing hundreds of people into the park to enjoy the day’s activities which included minion bowling, minion race rush and knots and crosses, with the reward being minion sweets.
The scouts were pulled out of the water on May 19.
