SPCA market the ‘purr-fect’ shopping experience

Book your bestie, load up the aunties and uncles, buckle up the kids and support the upcoming market, on July 4.

Visiting the Benoni SPCA and noticing an unused parcel of land, which forms part of its property, Toeksie Labuschagne, of Brakpan, did not see an area which may be teeming with creepy crawlies; instead, she saw the potential to merge her two passions.

As an animal lover and industrious crafter, Toeksie proposed that the space be used for a monthly crafters market in aid of the animal welfare society.

Not waiting for warmer weather or a special occasion, the spirited entrepreneur got to work, clearing the overgrown grass and printing banners, swinging open the organisation’s back gates, on Windermere Drive, Lakefield, on April 4 for the first SPCA Community Market.

Two months down the line, more than 20 vendors, offering an array of eclectic crafts, have secured their spots.

“Community calendars are buzzing with regular markets, and these remain well-supported,” said Toeksie, smiling as some of the SPCA residents bark a welcome to visitors of the June 6 event.

“My aim is to establish a market for local crafters and micro entrepreneurs to grow their business, while supporting the SPCA’s ongoing efforts to help animals in need.”

Running the market with discerning taste, Toeksie said that vendors are vetted to offer visitors a varied shopping experience.

“I want to grow the SPCA Community Market into a space where shoppers can buy a wide variety of locally produced items,” she said.

“Vendors with uniquely crafted items are welcome; I do guard against duplicate product offerings.”

Crafter of personalised wooden dog treat containers, Willie van Rensburg, said the market is refreshing.

“Forming part of the SPCA grounds, we remain aware that by supporting the initiative, we are actively advocating for the care and protection of man’s best friend,” said the parent to four fur-babies.

“You may come here to support local business, but you may also find the perfect four-legged companion at the same time.”

The SPCA Community Market takes place on the first Saturday of each month from 08:00 to 14:00.

An entry fee of R5 per person, in aid of the society, is payable.
