McCulloch reflects on back-to-back batting triumph

He was named the the Benoni Northerns Cricket Club academy's batsman of the year.

Michael McCulloch said being named the Benoni Northerns Cricket Club Academy batsman of the season for the second consecutive year is a reflection of hard work, faith and a journey of self-discovery.

McCulloch received the accolade at the club’s prize-giving on June 5, capping off an impressive season in which he continued to make his mark with the bat.

“I’m excited and grateful. I give all my glory to Jesus Christ. I put everything in His name no matter what,” he said.

“Winning the batsman of the year in back-to-back seasons means the world to me. This club will always be my home. This award shows my contribution to the club and that I’m proving myself to other people through my performances.”

The young batsman admitted the season did not begin as planned, but the early setbacks became valuable lessons that helped shape his campaign.

“It was a bit of a rough start to the season, especially getting out for a duck in the first game. From there, I started building, scoring 50s, getting to 80 and building every single innings,” he said.

“I learnt to express myself for longer periods and I really found out who I am this season. I learnt to push myself more and back my abilities throughout my batting career. The biggest lessons were better shot selection, patience and trusting my ability.”

Playing across five different leagues also provided McCulloch with valuable exposure and helped him understand the demands of higher-level cricket.

“The biggest thing I learnt was intent. Being in the same line-up with more experienced players who have played professional cricket showed me how they approach the game. They play with intent, and the biggest lesson was learning to move on quickly after making a mistake.”

The talented batsman now has his sights set on earning promotion to the club’s Premier League side, which recently enjoyed a successful season under coach Mark Robey.

McCulloch’s love for cricket began in Grade Six when his cousin Jonathan Jordan introduced him to the sport.

“I fell in love with it immediately,” he said. “Since then, my dad has always backed me. It’s because of my dad’s unwavering support that I’m still playing.”

The youngster draws inspiration from England batting great Joe Root, whom he admires for his consistency and all-round approach.

“All aspects of his game are perfect. I want to be like him.”
