Valke Rugby Union CEO Ettienne de Lange has paid tribute to the late East Rand United (ERU) founding member and rugby administrator Victor Lottering.

Lottering dedicated many years to rugby administration in the region, serving as an executive member of the former Eastern Transvaal Rugby Union and playing an important role in the game’s development.

De Lange said Lottering’s contribution extended beyond the rugby field, particularly during the post-apartheid period when rugby structures were being unified.

“Oom Vic was part of the leadership that helped guide the unification of rugby structures, working to bring people together and build a single, united rugby union,” De Lange said.

He added that Lottering’s commitment to reconciliation and unity helped lay the foundations for what is today the Valke Rugby Union.

Lottering’s service was recognised with Honorary Life Membership of the Valke Rugby Union, reflecting his dedication to the sport.

De Lange described Lottering as a gentleman, mentor and friend whose wisdom, humility and commitment to rugby left a lasting impression on those who worked alongside him.

He extended condolences to Lottering’s family, friends and loved ones, stating his service and vision would remain part of the history of Eastern Transvaal and Valke rugby.

Former SA Rugby Union president Brian van Rooyen and incumbent Mark Alexander also sent their tributes.

Speaking on behalf of ERU, chairperson Cyril Reeby said the club seconded the tribute, adding that it would miss its founding member.

“On behalf of the ERU, we say go well, Oom Lot. Rest in peace.”

Hi son, Vivian Lottering, the Gauteng Sports Confederation President described his father as a mountain of a man, a sentiment shared by all speakers at his memorial service and funeral, including Reeby.
