Blood donors recognised

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) acknowledged donors who have reached milestones, at the Benoni Country Club on October 7.

Donors traveled from far and wide to attend the auspicious evening filled with gratitude, food, laughter and one common goal – to help others.

The honorary evening thanked those who donated blood between 25 to 300 times.

The evening commended with the Master of Ceremonies, Wayne Keefer who kept the crowd laughing with his jokes.

He then welcomed one of SANBS management members, Sieme Prithvi Raj and the collections manager, Gillian Laurens who addressed the guests about how their blood donations have helped to stock 419 emergency blood fridges in hospitals for maternity wards among others.

“On average, we need to provide 3 000 litres of blood per day,” Raj said.

Once you have done your job, it becomes ours to use every drop wisely to help patients.”

Until date, Raj said 10 225 units of blood have been donated.

Guest speaker, Eileen van Tonder spoke to guests about how their donations contribute to saving lives.

“My son, Jordan (6) had thyroid cancer and had to undergo an eight hour operation,” van Tonder said.

“Donating blood is an active way of helping people.

“Donors give hope to everyone who is in need of receiving blood.”
