The bonfires are being stoked, the sherry is ready to flow and, most importantly, the walls at Art Alive Art School in Northmead are being adorned with spectacular locally produced artworks.

For four days only, art aficionados and community members are invited to the school’s La Sedicesima Esposizione (16th exhibition).

Partnering with Rotary Club of Benoni Aurora, in support of Clean Projects, the annual exhibition promises to wow visitors with visionary brush-strokes from the imaginations of local artists.

“This event has morphed into a well-supported exhibition, bringing community, fundraising and talent together in majestic harmony,” said Elaine Marx, owner of the school.

“Art is life. Through the eyes of its creator, it captures a moment of beauty, which is eternally preserved on canvas and for the observer it evokes feelings and emotions, the imagery becoming part of their heartbeat.

“The exhibition brings together the creatures and the observers sharing in the common admiration of beauty.”

Poring over her canvas, blending colours on her palette, Lindie Hibbert, a first-time exhibitor, gives a nervous smile.

“Did art at school but I am mostly self-taught. I’ve been attending classes for a month, hoping to brush up and refine my techniques,” she said.

“The self-expression of committing paint to surface brings me joy.”

Fatima Gani started exploring her creative side at the age of 53, specialising in realistic works.

“It is rewarding being able to capture a natural scene, using my senses to bring it to life,” she said while working on the barrel of a crashing wave.

“I attempt to bring nature into every indoor living space.”

Renowned artist and chairperson of the Benoni Art Society and Artists Working Together, Larry Mervitz, said the exhibit is an opportunity for artists to gain feedback from attendees, which in turn will aid them in further honing their craft.

“Events like this complete the circle from completing a work to getting it into the hands of people who appreciate art,” she said.

“Partnered with a charitable cause, the beauty of art is not only confined to walls but extends into the world that inspires us.”

During the showcase, visitors will enjoy the opportunity to purchase charity squares donated by local artists, with proceeds going to Clean Projects to support its ongoing beautification programmes throughout the city.

For the first time, the exhibition will also feature clay and pottery works, created by students of Sculpted Stories, which opened its doors in February.

Enjoy a leisurely stroll through works of art, warm your feet next to a blazing fire and shake hands with the men and women whose passion is transforming our streets.

Tickets are R90 per person and available from the art school at 56 Eleventh Avenue, Northmead.

Gallery doors open on July 29, 30 and 31 from 16:00 to 21:00 and on August 1 from 12:00 to 21:00.
