Inspiring future chefs

Maxis Northmead Mall launched a series of cooking competitions with learners from Belvedere School on March 18.

Four learners from the school, who have home economics as a subject, participated at the competition.

The learners had to prepare a tasty burger that will win over the judges’ taste buds.

Maxis Northmead Mall owner Nico Botha said he hopes that the cooking competitions will uplift the community and create awareness on what they do for the community.

His store is largely opened for underprivileged youth in the area, were they receive training.

The overall winner was Grade 11 learner Thys Shunder, who said the competition was nerve-wracking as he was up against strong competitors.

Selina Ngwenya (second place), Johnathan Mackenzie (third place) and Mtokozisi Mashaba (fourth place) also put in good performances.

The next cooking competition, which will host learners from other local schools, will be held in April and June, with the final due to be held on August 19.

Various prizes are on offer for the winning learners, along with possible learnerships.
