Winter school for disadvantaged learners

Eduskillsrainbow ran winter school classes for disadvantaged primary learners, at Wattville's Adelaide Tambo Centre.

The classes ran for three weeks and offered lessons in two English and Mathematics.

Bajith Panday of Eduskillsrainbow told learners that the lessons were a “small part of our contribution to your education”.

He quoted Nelson Mandela when he said: “Education is the most important weapon one can use to change the world.”

Without education you won’t be able to have a profession or to succeed, he said.

Panday encouraged the learners to at least ensure they have matric.

On the day, each learner received a blanket donated by Brian Harly of the Trading Post, who has sponsored the winter school in this way for the past three years.

Harly told learners: “If you are prepared to dedicate your holiday you will go far in life; strive for education.”

Volunteer educators were also honoured with certificates of appreciation on the day.

Maths and English lessons will be taught every Saturday and Ahmed Ismail, founder of Siyanfunda Community

Technology Centre promised to avail computers to help improve learners’s technology skills.

Debonairs Pizza (Key Largo Boksburg) provided free bread to learners every morning.
