EMPD arrests 25 speedsters

The Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department arrested 25 people for speeding over the weekend.

EMPD spokesman Wilfred Kgasago said that speedsters learned the hard way when, between Friday, July 19, until the morning of July 21, 25 drivers were arrested for exceeding the speed limit in Brakpan and Benoni.

Ten were nabbed on July 21, nine on Saturday and six on Friday.

“These special speed operations were conducted between 6am and 10am on those days,” said Kgasago.

“On July 21, a man driving 138km/h on Heidelburg Road, between Kaapmuiden and Dube roads, which is an 80km zone stretch of road, was arrested.”

The other nine registered speeds of between 13km/h and 118km/h.

On the same day, in Benoni, on Van Dyk Road, between Falkirk and Aberdeen roads, a 60km/h zone, the driver of an Audi sedan was arrested for doing 98km/h.

Kgasago said all the arrested drivers were able to raise bail of between R500 and R1 000, and avoided sleeping in jail.

They will all appear in the Brakpan or Benoni Magistrates Courts soon, to face reckless and negligent driving charges.
