Sainsbury turns 99
Fairleads resident Robert George “Bob” Sainsbury turned 99 years old on June 27.

On his birthday, Sainsbury had lunch with his eldest son, Len, and friend Annette Obermuller at a prominent restaurant in Benoni.
On July 29, he celebrated by having a small lunch with family and friends in Alphen Park.
I am very happy about turning 99, but I am where I am today because of God’s will,” he said.
Sainsbury was born in 1914, in Robertson, a small town in the Western Cape.
He was educated at Paul Roos Gymnasium, in Stellenbosch, and matriculated in 1932.
He then worked as a messenger at Old Mutual until 1943, after which he moved to various government departments and companies before joining International Computers Ltd, for 18 years.
When he retired, he settled at Pennington, on the Natal South.
In 1937 he married Eileen Harper, who died in 1942.
He later met and married Win Abbott, and they lived at the Impala Park Old Age Village in Boksburg, and then moved to Mooihawens Old Age Home, in Winkelspruit, in 2007.
Win died in 2010.
Sainsbury has three children, Malcolm, Len and Elaine.
