Farrarmere residents object to tower

Approximately 250 people have signed an letter of objection in an attempt to stop construction of a telecommunication mast and base station in Farrarmere.

Objectors have until August 6 to lodge their objections to the structure, which is due to be built on the grounds of the Benoni Baptist Church, at 33 Wordsworth Street, Farrarmere.

Spokesperson for the Farrarmere residents, Elwyn Donald, said no public consultation was undertaken to inform residents in the area of plans to construct the station.

He says the only notification to residents has been in the form of a small notice board, displayed by the applicant outside each of the two entrances to the church’s parking area.

Donald said residents are opposed to the structure, as it may pose health risks to people living near it, the aesthetics of the area will affected and there will be a potential decline in property values of houses near the structure.

Ekurhuleni’s acting media relations unit manager, Sam Modiba, said the objections will be referred to council’s tribunal for consideration after they have been lodged with the council.
