This follows a toilet exhibition by manufactures outside council chambers, in Germiston, on August 1.
In her speech to council on August 1, DA caucus leader Shelly Loe said it was after her speech to council, dedicated to the subject of toilets, last month, that there is now action.
“I and other councillors attended MMC Aubrey Nxumalo’s hastily called sanitation indaba last week, which demonstrated that he, at least, is no longer in denial about the disgraceful state of affairs in informal settlements,” said Loe.
She added that she hopes the MMC’s sense of urgency culminates in toilets actually being provided in their numbers before Christmas.
“Let’s honour women in this council not just with speeches on Woman’s Day, but with decent, proper, working toilets that grant human dignity,” said Loe.
In response, Ekurhuleni mayor Mondli Gungubele said that, as council, they have long intervened in the toilet saga.
“There is movement everywhere with regard to sanitation, in Mayfield and in Tembisa,” said Gungubele.
He added that they went out to listen to people when they protested and have been dealing with the matter since.
