Church league helps the needy

The Benoni branch of the Catholic Women’s League (CWL) lives up to its motto of charity work and loyalty.

It was initially established in January 1933, and is currently divided into a morning and an evening group.

The groups do not only support the parish by supplying the funeral teas and preparing food for various parish events, they often visit the sick in hospitals and give support to members of the public who are in need.

The morning group supports the St Francis Care Centre with donations, and also supports the Culture of Life Divine Mercy House, a home for young girls in a pregnancy crisis, in Brakpan.

The evening group assists the Barcelona squatter camp, in Daveyton

The two groups help St Anne’s Home for Elderly Ladies in Edenvale, the main project of the league, by making birthday cards and a yearly donation.

The league hosts an annual party during December, for 300 pupils at St Joseph’s School, in Actonville.

The Salvation Army is treated to tea on a monthly basis and the Old People’s Home also has an annual party, during June.

“Our work is ongoing and we truly live up to our motto: Charity, Work and Loyalty,” concluded Ann Scott, secretary of the CWL morning group.
