A multi-talented star in the making
Benoni’s fencing champ, Gaelan Wort, a 13-year-old pupil of Rynfield Primary School, proved his talent diversity does not stop at fencing, when he qualified for his national colours in the arts, after being selected as one of South Africa’s top 10 acts, at the national finals for the Performing Arts, earlier this year.
Gaelan, who has been taking drama since pre-school, was a member of Team SA, who went to New York, to represent South Africa at the Talent America finals competition, at the Hilton Hotel, in Connecticut, on July 19 and 22.
Finalists from every state in America and South Africa competed in this prestigious event, that was judged by more than 20 of the most influential “star makers” in the entertainment industry.
Gaelan competed in the 13-17 age group, which combined the three genres of acting, singing and dance.
He won third place overall in this age group and also received the “Johnny Depp” Special Award, for acting.
As a finalist he was invited to perform an act in a special showcase in a theatre “Off Broadway”, for which he received a special medal.
Gaelon is rapidly mastering the art of fencing and received his full provincial colours for fencing in foil.
In December 2012 he won gold representing Rynfield Primary School at the Gauteng Fencing Association Schools League in Johannesburg.
Next year he will take part in the South African Championships.
He also excels academically and earned the title of top student for two consecutive years.
The inevitable challenge Gaelan has to face is managing his time.
His mother, Zia Wort, told the City Times that almost every hour of their time is structured, but that he is very diligent and mature in utilising his time.
She added that both she and her husband, Glenn, are extremely proud of him.
