Belnori hosts successful dairy day

The Benoni-based Belnori Boutique Cheesery hosted the MPO Gauteng Dairy Day, at its premises, on August 13.

Five speakers discussed feed and the impact it has on the content of milk, particularly when making cheese; hygiene, animal handling and recent developments at the dairy section of the Agricultural Research Centre.

A total of 32 exhibitors were on display and offered services to the dairy industry – including fertilizer concerns, feed manufacturers, feed additives, measuring instruments, milking machines, cheese requisites, veterinary items, packaging, labels and labelling machines, to name a few.

The purpose of the day was to offer a platform for disseminating information to people in the dairy industry, or those who wish to enter the dairy industry.

‘‘We had a huge response and it included established dairy farms (cows and goats), big and small cheeseries and many people who want to enter the dairy industry – a fantastic cross-section of people,’’ said co-owner of Belnori, Rina Belcher.

‘‘The response has been nothing less than fantastic.

‘‘It just proves that there is a huge thirst for information and knowledge and a great need for people to interact with others who have the same or similar interests.

‘‘Not only did the attendees get useful information from the speakers, they discovered many products that they were either unaware of or unsure of where to obtain.

‘‘The interaction with others in the same industry is invaluable.’’

Belnori’s Kilimanjaro cheese brand won a silver medal at the World Cheese Awards, on November 28, last year.
