SAPS receive more complaints
Allegations of two Benoni police officers’ misconduct at a call out to the Benoni Bunny Park will be investigated by the Benoni SAPS.
Two Benoni police officers attended a call to the Bunny Park on Sunday, August 25, where a woman and her daughter were allegedly harassed by a drunk family at the Bunny Park.
The woman, who is 63, and does not want to be named, said she asked the drunk family to stop swearing in front of her family.
‘‘A young woman ran up to my daughter who had her baby in her arms and threatened to hit her and to actually murder her right there, and when I tried to intervene, the husband came up and threatened to beat me up,’’ said the 63-year-old.
According to the woman, she called police after which they told her there was nothing that could be done, as there were no physical injuries and that threats of violence were not a crime in South Africa.
‘‘…One policeman told my daughter that even if that woman did murder her, nothing would be done anyway, as this was South Africa,’’ said the woman.
The caretaker at the Bunny Park, Gideon Strydom, said drinking is not permitted at the premises, and he did not find any evidence of alcohol in the “drunk” family’s possession.
Benoni SAPS media liaison officer Lieut Nomsa Sekele confirmed two of the station’s officers attended the scene, but the officers denied making those statements.
Police will investigate the allegations and, if necessary, action will be taken against the members.
