Part one of dialogue series a success
The Rotary Club of Benoni Aurora and Ebotse Golf and Country Estate hosted the first event in the Aurora Ebotse Public Dialogue series, on Wednesday, September 4, at The Ebotse Clubhouse.
The speaker for the evening was Fred Swaniker, head of the African Leadership Academy, in Honeydew.
Swaniker’s passion lies with Africa.
“One thing holding us back from reaching our full potential is good leadership,” is a belief he emphasised more than once.
In line with this, he has founded two organisations that aim to catalyse a new generation of ethical, entrepreneurial African leaders: African Leadership Academy and the African Leadership Network.
At the academy they find young people who have the potential to lead and develop their skills.
“We don’t see ourselves as giving knowledge, but rather teaching values,” Swaniker explained.
His aim is to develop systems that keep the continent developing.
He has been recognised as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, and was listed by Forbes Magazine among the top 10 young “power men” in Africa, in 2011, among other accolades.
Swaniker began his professional career as a consultant with Mckinsey and Company, and has an MBA from Stanford Business School.
After introducing the academy and telling his story about establishing the academy, he engaged with guests, answering their questions.
President-elect of the Benoni Aurora Rotary Club, Denis Brandjes, said he thought it was a great start.
“We need to look at leadership in Africa with different eyes,” he added.
The next part of the series will be held on October 16.
