Tuk-Tuks on the loose
Coming into view on the streets of Benoni are the world famous tuk-tuks.
Making these little three-wheeled, yellow vehicles local was the initiative of Karen Lundie and her business partner Trish Eksteen.
“We plan to have six to eight vehicles servicing Benoni and surrounding areas,” she said.
The tuk-tuks are imported from India and their use was originally the idea of Trish’s brother-in-law, Riaz Ebrahim, who started the service in Lenasia, Johannesburg.
“A lot of older people do not have cars and need to be taken where they need to be,” said Trish.
“We did the H2O the other night and it was a huge success.” said Karen.
The drivers of these vehicles must have a K53 driving licence and also a professional driving permit.
“We want to grow and envision being a professional transportation service,” Karen explained, adding that what makes this a good form of public transportation is that it is safe, quick and cheap — and fun.
