Charities to benefit from Charity MileorCharity Mile time

The Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile, which will be held at the Turffontein Race Course on Saturday, November 2, is a special race, because the 16 horses in the field all run for a charity, with their finishing positions determining how much money each of the charities wins.

And this year the Benoni City Times is a media partner in the event.

The race is an annual event, one of the most poignant occasions on the racing calendar.

A total of R550 000 is given away, with the charity tied to the winner taking home a cheque for R100 000.

Second place is worth R70 000 to the charity, with R50 000 for third, R40 000 for fourth, R30 000 for fifth and R29 000, R28 000, R27 000 and R26 000 for sixth to ninth.

The charities represented by the horses who finish 10th and 11th receive R25 000, with the last five charities getting R20 000 each.

No charity goes home empty-handed and, even if it is not represented by a runner because of a scratching, it will still get R20 000.

Welamlambo Primary Aftercare Centre and the Benoni City Times will be partnered by celebrity Joan Madibeng, who will be the “face” of the charity at the event, and have drawn Moon of Rangoon as their horse for the Charity Mile.

Welamlambo caters for 68 children, some orphans, aged six to 14 from three schools in the old section of Tembisa.

The Peermont Children’s Trust (PCT) provides an oasis with hot meals, uniforms and help with homework. Welamlambo has a library and jungle gym.

Celebrity Joan Madibeng, now a marketing and corporate communications businesswoman, former Miss South African and Mamelodi Sundowns marketing manager, is an inspirational role model who has been involved in local and international social awareness campaigns, with her pet projects mostly concerning child welfare.
