Owlproject.org said it’s proud to continue its partnership with Lacomo Lifestyle Estate in support of urban owl conservation and environmental education, with the ringing of a Spotted Eagle Owl as part of an ongoing effort to monitor and better understand owl populations within urban environments.

The initiative forms part of Owlproject.org’s commitment to conservation through education, research and community involvement.

By working alongside residential estates such as Lacomo Lifestyle Estate, the organisation aims to encourage communities to appreciate and protect the wildlife that shares their environment.

The Spotted Eagle Owl was discovered on the highway between Standerton and Volksrust by the SPCA inspector Jen Tinkler and safely handed to Owlproject.org.

Frans Burger ringed the owl to assist with its identification and monitoring.

Owlproject.org representative Itumeleng Maroga explained that bird ringing provides valuable information that can contribute to understanding an individual bird’s movements, survival, distribution and behaviour over time.

“Urban spaces are increasingly important habitats for many wildlife species, including owls,” Maroga said.

“Partnerships with communities and residential estates allow us to monitor these birds while also creating opportunities to educate residents about the role owls play in maintaining healthy ecosystems.”

Maroga added that the collaboration with Lacomo Lifestyle Estate demonstrates how conservation can take place within everyday residential environments.

“Spotted Eagle Owls are adaptable birds and can often be found living alongside people, where they play an important ecological role as natural predators of rodents and other small animals.

“Through initiatives such as owl ringing, educational talks and community engagement, Owlproject.org hopes to strengthen awareness of the importance of protecting indigenous wildlife and preserving suitable habitats for birds of prey.”

She said the organisation looks forward to continuing its relationship with Lacomo Lifestyle Estate and building on this initiative to promote responsible coexistence between residents and wildlife.
