Take extra precautions and be aware of fireworks during Guy Fawkes and Deepavali

The Guy Fawkes and Deepavali festivals are around the corner and, as is customary, fireworks will be lit in celebration.

Deepavali will be celebrated on November 3, this year, and Guy Fawkes on November 5, but pet owners need to be aware that fireworks are often set off at any time around those dates.

Benoni SPCA senior inspector Annalise Jungman advised people who have pets to get tranquillisers for them during the festivals.

“People who are afraid that their pets may get lost should microchip them — that way it is easier for us to identify lost pets and safely return them to their homes,” she explained.

She said that the Benoni SPCA will be working straight from their offices during Deepavali and both inspectors will be on duty.

According to EMPD media liaison officer Wilfred Kgasago, the setting off of fireworks is governed both in terms of EMPD noise by-laws and Gauteng noise control regulations.

“Persons wishing to set off fireworks in a residential area should apply to the nearest EMPD Precinct Station for a permit,” he said.

“With regard to public displays, applications have to be submitted to the SAPS.

“This is a very difficult offence to enforce.”

The EMPD implores the public to supervise children when fireworks are used and to also take into account the well-being of domestic animals.

They depend mostly on the public reporting irresponsible setting off of fireworks, which can be done on 011 458 0911, at any time.
