Man stabbed after foiled car theft
One man was stabbed in the neck and another in the arm while they attempted to apprehend a third man, who was allegedly trying to steal a car.
The incident happened at the Benoni Bowling Club, on Sunday, last week, at around noon.
John Pollock (48), who was stabbed in the neck, said said he was at the bowling club when he saw an unfamiliar BMW, occupied by two men, enter the premises.
One of the men exited the car and stood by one of the other cars in the parking lot.
“The guy got out of the car and fiddled at the door,” said Pollock.
“I ran toward him, without shoes, across the bowling green.”
He said the man in the BMW tried to run him over as he was running towards the man who was fiddling with the car.
The man, who had already gained access to the car, made a run for it as Pollock approached.
Pollock apprehended him at the gate, after being stabbed in the neck by the suspect, who used a sharpened allen key.
Another man at the club, who assisted Pollock, was stabbed in the arm.
The two men managed to cable tie the man’s arms and called the police.
The man in the BMW drove off in it.
Pollock did seek medical care and is on medication.
Benoni SAPS media liaison officer Lieut Nomsa Sekele said, on Monday, that the 34-year-old suspect was still in the police station’s holding cells.
He is facing charges of attempted theft of a motor vehicle.
