Shootout with police, one arrested

A 35-year-old man is in detention at Modderbee Prison, for his role in a business robbery in Chief Albert Luthuli Park.

The suspect is one of four men who are believed to have robbed the tuck shop in Chief Albert Luthuli Park on November 13.

“Four suspects, one of whom one was armed with a firearm, while the other three carried with knives, entered the shop as the owner was about to close,” said Crystal Park media liaison officer Tryna Maritz.

“The suspects threatened the owner, saying that they would kill his brother if he did not unlock the security door.

“They then robbed the shop of R4 000 cash and airtime valued at R3 000.

“They also took cigarettes and groceries.”

Police arrived on scene and exchanged gunfire with the suspects.

No one was injured in the shootout and the police managed to recover the stolen goods.

The suspect appeared in the Benoni Magistrates Court on November 18, where his bail was opposed.

He is expected in court soon.

The man’s three accomplices are still at large, but police say more arrests are expected soon.
