The 49-year-old opened a false hijacking case at the Benoni Police Station, but he was arrested after the investigating officer, WO Frans Madise, established that he had, in fact, pawned his car for cash.
“He was unable to repay his loan and so he decided to open a false hijacking case,” said Benoni police spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele.
He opened the case on November 2.
He told the police that men in two taxis pointed firearms at him and ordered him out of his vehicle at the traffic lights in Main Reef Road.
Sekele warned that perjury is a serious crime and that people will be arrested for this.
The man will appear soon in the Benoni Magistrates Court.
