Journalists cook up a storm
The City Times was one of four publications who got to play "chef" at the annual journalists' cook-off, recently.
This fun-filled day was presented by Capsicum Culinary Studio, in Boksburg, one of South Africa’s leading national professional chef and hospitality education and training institutions.
With my colleague, Kevin van der List, and I representing the Benoni City Times, it was quite an interesting experience, as our lunch-making skills usually involve going to fast-food restaurants near the office.
We had an hour to prepare two dishes and decided on a creamy chicken-curry dish for our main course and chocolate mousse with strawberries for dessert.
With the help of chefs Lesley Walker and Nico Lombard we received the necessary guidance to prepare mouth-watering dishes.
Cooking alongside some of our sister publications from Caxton East Rand — the Boksburg Advertiser, Kempton Express and Get it Joburg East — the day was more of a fun gathering than a competition.
The judges decided to bestow the win upon Kempton Express’s deserving Siyabonga Ngwenya, with her sneakily simple, but delicious home-cooked meal of Portuguese chicken with mashed potatoes and vegetables.
The best part of the day was ending it off by nibbling each other’s offerings.
The institution offers full-and part-time courses, where you too can be transformed into Jamie Oliver. TB
