A raid on a Northmead property, recently, resulted in the discovery of drugs, firearms, several explosives and several identity documents and passports.

Officers from the Benoni and Pretoria Flying Squad followed a tip-off to a house in Stokroos Street, in Northmead, on January 28.

“They pounced on the property at 11pm and spent the whole night there,” said police spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele.

Three unlicensed assault rifles, a large quantity of ammunition and explosives, a bulletproof vest, a stolen BMW, drugs, computers, and identity documents and passports belonging to various people were recovered at the property.

A 34-year-old man has been arrested and charged with:

  •  possession of a stolen car;
  •  possession of ammunition;
  •  possession of explosives;
  •  possession of drugs;
  •  possession of unlicensed firearms;
  •  possession of suspected stolen property.

He was due to appear in the Benoni Magistrates Court on January 30.

Provincial police spokesperson Sgt Obakeng Mabaso said the weapons are believed to have been used in serious and violent crimes in and around Gauteng.

At the time of going to press, Mabaso did not know the value or quantity of drugs.

She could also not confirm the type of explosives.
