Residents disapprove of councilllors’ salary increment

Locals have expressed dissatisfaction over councillors receiving a salary increase.

The City Times posted a question on its Facebook page, asking whether councillors deserve a salary increase.

Here’s what residents had to say:

Lee Bosch: “Hell no. It should be reduced until such a time that they actually improve their cities’ states, start doing the job they are employed to do and start spending the tax money on improving the city and its surrounding neighbourhoods.

Furthermore, they should be given much cheaper cars that require much less fuel and maintenance to operate than the ones they currently purchase and own. Reduce spending on fancy outings and conferences and put more into the public school system as well, and use the facilities your local municipal buildings have, or buildings in the local community, instead of flying to a fancy coastal spa and conference centres for a week, for something that could have been sorted out in a day or two at the most, locally. In short, they are wasting money that should be used to improve the image and standing of the city they are entrusted with.”

Vanessa Arundel: “No. Not until they have sorted out their nonsense. Do your jobs.”

Rod Scheepers: “Never. If they were paid on a result-based package, most would receive nothing.”

Christian Vus Masuku: “Why should they be paid more? We put them in power and in return they do nothing for us.

They don’t even attend or call ward meetings. Sorry no money for them.”

Freddie Wisser: “With their results over the past few years, I think a pay cut is in order.”

Elinor Muller: “No. until they do what they have to do. Our pavement and parks and streets are a disgrace.

What are they doing with the money we pay in rates? I think we should all stop pay rate then see how they going to cope.”

Nikknet More: “No increase. Other projects are sidelined because of budget, so no money.”

Nellie van Rensburg: “It should be cut altogether.”

Paula Muller Pohl: “No way. It means we will probably pay more tax. No civilian can afford it.”
