Armed robbers get lengthy jail time

Thorough investigation by Benoni police investigating officer Det-Const Christian Popela, last week, sent two thugs to prison for a long time.

David Tsofala Motlafi (52) and Barnabas Lichaba (37) were sentenced to an effective to 13 years in prison for armed robbery.

The two robbed Grillos Road House (at the intersection of Elston Avenue and Tom Jones Street), in December, 2010.

They were later traced to Wattville, through the cellphones they stole from the manager and an employee.

“They entered the business in the morning, soon after it opened, pointed a firearm at the manager and an employee and locked both of them in the cold room, while they stole an undisclosed amount of money from the safe,” said Benoni police spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele.

They also stole wallets and watches.

The two men were sentenced on January 30, in the Benoni Magistrates Court.

Sekele congratulated Popela for a job well done.
