Two Daveyton youngsters get trust scholarships
On January 18, Daveyton residents Nqobisile Mhlongo and Thabiso Lekoma were two of eight people who received Peermont Education Trust scholarship.
These promising individuals not only have their fees paid, they also receive the support of the Peermont team in the form of mentorship and coaching, as well as workshops led by Learning to Learn and Dynamic Intervention.
Together, all the service providers ensure that the students have the very best advantage and this is what enables the trust to maintain an 85 per cent pass rate.
The students will be mentored by trust administrator Jenny Findlay.
“This is the critical difference that the trust bursary offers and it is extremely important for young people who come from disadvantaged communities,” Mhlongo said.
By meeting with the students monthly, problems are identified early and assistance can be offered.
Speaking after receiving the good news, Mhlongo said: “After my parents died, my siblings and I were brought up by my grandmother, who is a cleaner for Tiger Brands, so going to university was just a dream.”
Mhlongo will study towards a BSc electrical engineering qualification, at the University of Pretoria, while Thabiso Lekoma will study towards a mining engineering qualification, at the University of the Witwatersrand.
Students are encouraged to “plough back” services to their communities and, as a result, they have been conducting academic support programmes in their schools during vacations.
In total, over 100 young people have been granted full scholarships for tertiary courses by the Peermont Trust.
