In the spirit of love
Benoni residents Hans (73) and Ann (70) Timp have been married for 50 years and, in the spirit of Valentine’s Day, they shared their views on marriage and love.
The couple met at a church in Randfontein, during their youth.
“We went to the same church, but we were never friends; after a few years we decided to date and the rest is, as they say, history,” said Ann.
They were married in 1963 and had three children, Adriaan, Paul and Dirk.
“We are lucky to have each other every day,” said Ann.
Hans currently works in the sales department at a security company while Ann has retired.
“When we were younger it was easier to celebrate Valentine’s Day; after 50 years it’s not that easy any more,” said Hans.
Ann added that they always make an effort to do something special on the day.
They both agreed that the three important things any relationship must have is God, commitment and understanding.
“Our advice to young couples is to have God in their lives and to persevere even through the hard times.
“It is not easy, but it can be done,” concluded Ann.
